Alternatives to Suspension *IN PERSON* facilitated by Michelle Levy – 8:30-2:30pm
This course is intended to help administrators and staff understand that exclusionary practices have significant short and long-tern negative effects on students’ academic, social-emotional, and mental health wellness. There are alternative approaches to discipline that lead to improved student outcomes. Effective alternatives to suspension focuses on restorative practices, behavioral interventions, and social-emotional learning, keeping students in school while addressing the root causes of behavior. Participants will: 1) Understand the purpose (why, when and how) of using alternatives to suspension 2) Gain knowledge of the recent research on school suspensions 3) Learn how a systemic change to the approach to discipline and problem behavior can affect school climate and learning 4) Learn practical, replicable ideas to use as effective and proactive alternatives to suspension. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
